Q. Where were you at the time? A. I was at the inn. Everyone was. Q. What did you understand the dispute to be? A. I knew what everyone knew, which was that the two of them were not speaking. Q. Did you say so at the time? A. I did what anyone would do, which was nothing.
Cross-examined. Q. How far is it from your door to the place? A. 265 paces. Q. You have measured it? A. My boy has. Q. For this case? A. For his own reasons.
Witness for the plaintiff: the keeper of the toll-house
The keeper of the toll-house, sworn. Examined by counsel for the plaintiff.
Q. Where were you at the time? A. I was at my work. I heard a noise and went to the door. Q. What did you understand the dispute to be? A. I understood there was a quarrel about an article in The Evening Courier. Everyone understood that. Q. Did you say so at the time? A. I said nothing until I was asked, and I was asked yesterday.
Cross-examined. Q. You did not see the document? A. I saw a paper. Q. You could not read it from where you stood? A. I could not, and I did not try.
Submissions
Counsel addressed the court. The judge asked for the deeds, read them at the bench, and retired.
Judgment
The judge returned to the bench at ten in the forenoon and read the judgment, which is entered in the Law Reports in these terms.
